With KOHLER backup generators now standing by to carry a full load in the event of a power outage, and with a scalable path to future expansion, the Alltel Data Center is now virtually uninterruptible.
As the Alltel Communications Data Center at the home office in Little Rock, Arkansas expands to accommodate rapid growth in both subscribers and services, no-fail technical solutions are at a premium. Faced with a potentially catastrophic disruption of operations in the event of a power outage, Alltel has taken an aggressive approach to maintaining sufficient standby power by contracting for a scalable backup power system.

“We needed an experienced generator distributor who also represented a manufacturer willing to tailor equipment to meet our needs,” says Larry Buster, Manager, Alltel Data Center. “RP Power performed in-house load analyses, and then participated in the many design and planning meetings with engineering consultants to write the best specification. As a KOHLER distributor, RP Power had the flexibility to custom design, install and test a complex and time-critical solution to provide backup power.”
Serving over 15 million customers in 35 states, Alltel is the largest regional mobile phone company and the fifth largest cellular phone company overall in the U.S. A spate of acquisitions, plus innovative new calling plans and a clever television marketing campaign poking fun at the larger cellular companies won Alltel over one million new customers and soaring revenues in 2006.
With KOHLER backup generators now standing by to carry a full load in the event of a power outage, and with a scalable path to future expansion, the Alltel Data Center is now virtually uninterruptible. Continuing monthly, quarterly and annual checks of the KOHLER generators and switchgear with their own load bank ensure future reliability. As a second backup, portable KOHLER generators are also available from RP Power in the event of any unanticipated event requiring an emergency response at Alltel.
