Kohler Brings Builder Market an Electric Distribution Panel with Generator-Ready Transfer Switch Combined Into a Single PackageNew Intelligent Transfer Switch also includes an automated load-shedding option
Kohler, Wis. - February 2008 - Kohler Power Systems (KohlerSmartPower.com) introduces the first combination load center and transfer switch package available for the residential standby power market, with its new Model RSB Intelligent Transfer Switch. This innovative product allows builders to build every home generator-ready. Kohler and Schneider Electric’s North American Operating Division, best known in the United States for its Square D brand, have agreed to produce, market and sell this new electrical load distribution enclosure and automatic transfer switch as one package - which also features an optional load-shedding module. These load-shedding modules offer significant flexibility in that the homeowner can set up their house to have all its electrical units backed up by the generator or just selected "essential" items.
The two-in-one load center (38-40 circuits) will make less work for builders and electrical contractors involved in new home construction or major remodeling projects, and, provide the new homeowner with a generator-ready residence.
The load shed module for the Model RSB Intelligent Transfer Switch utilizes electrically operated circuit breakers that disconnect selected loads prior to the transfer to generator power, and retransfer the loads upon utility power being restored. This allows essential loads to be configured in the transfer switch while still maintaining all the advantages of consolidating the home’s primary load center and transfer switch into a single box.
Because the KOHLER Intelligent Transfer Switch eliminates the need for a second distribution panel and additional wiring for a standby residential generator, contractors can realize savings of $800-$1,200 from reduced installation time and costs.
"Kohler and Square D are rethinking the way homes are powered in the future," said Melanie Tydrich, senior channel manager-residential generators, for Kohler Power Systems. "This new product is distinct from our traditional transfer switch product line and is particularly beneficial for new construction and major remodeling projects where new wiring is necessary."
Added Tydrich: "Builders can set themselves apart from the competition by offering their customers a generator-ready home, while also simplifying the installation process for the homeowner seeking a standby generator at the time of construction or post construction."
The new Model RSB Intelligent Transfer Switch combines the Square D QO load center and its smart breaker system, with KOHLER transfer switch logic. Key features include:
- Service-entrance rated transfer switch
- UL 67 Listed and tested to UL 1008
- 150, 200, and 225 amp models available
- 5 year limited warranty
The transfer switch portion of this new load center is responsible for monitoring utility power for any interruptions. Should a power failure occur, the transfer switch automatically transfers the electrical load to the generator. When utility power is restored, the transfer switch transfers the electrical load back to the utility and shuts the generator down.
